Active ingredient: Scopolamine

Brand Name: Hyoscine

Drug class: Anticholinergic

Mechanism of Action:

Scopolamine is a medication used to treat postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and motion sickness. It belongs to the anticholinergic class of drugs and is derived from plants such as Datura stramonium, Scopolia carniolica, and Hyoscyamus niger. Scopolamine works by blocking the action of acetylcholine on muscarinic receptors in the central and peripheral nervous systems, leading to reduced secretions, muscle relaxation, and decreased nerve signals related to motion sickness. The most common side effect is dry mouth, which can affect up to two-thirds of patients.

Effect on fertility biomarkers

Regarding fertility, scopolamine can reduce cervical mucus production, creating a less favorable environment for sperm movement.
