Active ingredient: Potassium Iodide

Brand Name: Pima Syrup, SSKI, Iosat, ThyroSafe, and ThyroShield

Drug class: Anti-thyroid medications

Mechanism of Action:

Potassium iodide (KI) protects the thyroid by blocking radioactive iodine, particularly in nuclear emergencies, reducing the risk of thyroid cancer. It’s also used as an expectorant to thin mucus in lung conditions and in higher doses to treat hyperthyroidism and iodine deficiency.

Effect on fertility biomarkers

In addition to its mucolytic effects, potassium iodide specifically thins cervical mucus, making it less viscous. This can improve sperm movement and enhance fertility, especially in cases of abnormally thick mucus. However, on fertility charts, continuous mucus production may be observed while taking potassium iodide, reflecting its mucus-thinning effects
