Active ingredient: Griseofulvin

Brand Name: Grifulvin V, Gris-PEG

Drug class: Antifungal medications

Mechanism of Action:

Griseofulvin is an antifungal medication primarily used to treat fungal infections of the skin, hair, and nails, such as ringworm and athlete’s foot. It works by binding to tubulin, inhibiting microtubule function and disrupting fungal cell division, preventing the fungus from multiplying.

Effect on fertility biomarkers

griseofulvin is a moderate inducer of cytochrome P450 enzymes in the liver. This induction can increase the metabolism of estrogen and progesterone, similar to rifampicin, potentially reducing the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives. As a result, women using oral contraceptives while on griseofulvin may experience reduced hormone levels, increasing the risk of unintended pregnancy.
