Recent research investigated the anti-fertility effects of different extracts of Citrus limonum seeds in female albino mice. The study administered petroleum ether, alcoholic, and aqueous extracts orally for seven days post-insemination. The findings revealed that the alcoholic extract exhibited a significant anti-fertility effect compared to the other extracts. Further fractionation of the alcoholic extract identified the ethyl acetate fraction (fractions 12-25) as the most effective in demonstrating anti-fertility activity.
The mechanism of action of the effective extracts primarily involved anti-zygotic properties, meaning they hindered the fertilization process and prevented successful implantation of the embryo. Notably, the withdrawal of the test drug led to the complete restoration of fertility in the treated mice, indicating that the anti-fertility effect was reversible.
